This tutorial will walk you through each step to design a durable, attractive cover that not only protects your journal but also adds a touch of creative flair. - Wonderclips
- 7” x 10” Sketch book
- Basic sewing supplies and tools
Journal Cutting Instructions:
Herringbone – Dark Teal (A)
- Cut (1) 11 ½” x WOF strip. Sub-cut (1) 11 ½” square and
(1) 8 ½” x 11 ½” rectangle.
- From the remaining fabric, cut (1) 2 ½” x 16 ½” strip and
(1) 2 ½” x 12 ½” strip.
Gridlines – Light Teal (B)
- Cut (1) 8 ½” x WOF strip. Sub-cut (1) 8 ½” x 11 ½” rectangle, (1) 2 ½” x 15 ½” strip and (1) 2 ½” x 13 ½” strip.
Fresh Cuts Solid-Tide (C)
- Cut (1) 11 ½” x WOF strip. Sub-cut (1) 11 ½” x 18 ½” rectangle, (1) 3 ½” x 4 ½” rectangle, (1) 2 ½” x 6 ½” strip, (1) 2 ½” x 5 ½” strip, (1) 2 ½” x 3 ½” strip and (1) 2 ½” square.
Hexagons - Teal (D)
- Cut (1) 11 ½” x WOF strip. Sub-cut (1) 11 ½” x 14 ½” rectangle, (1) 4” x 5 ½” rectangle and (1) 3 ½” x 14 ½” strip
FuseEase Medium Weight
- Cut (2) 11 ½” x 18 ½” rectangles
FuseEase Light Weight
- (2) 4” x 11 ½” rectangles, (1) 5 ½” x 11 ½” rectangle and (1) 7” x 11 ½” rectangle.
Journal Cover Assembly Instructions
- Lay out the assorted strips as shown. Sew the assorted strips together into rows.
- Sew the rows together to make (1) 18 ½” x 11 ½” Unit 1 rectangle.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to press one 11 ½” x 18 ½” piece of FuseEase Medium stabilizer to the wrong side of the Unit 1 rectangle.
- Fold (1) 4” x 5 ½ Fabric D strip in half lengthwise, right sides together.
- Sew down each side and across the bottom, leaving an opening for turning. Turn the sewn fabric right side out and press to make (1) 2 ½” x 3 ½” Unit 2 pocket.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to press one 11 ½” x 18 ½” piece of stabilizer to the wrong side of (1) 11 ½”x 18 ½” Fabric C rectangle to make Unit 3
- Align (1) 4” x 11 ½” piece of FuseEase Light stabilizer aligning it along the left edge on the wrong side of (1) 8 ½” x 11 ½” Fabric A rectangle to make (1) Unit 4 piece.
- Take Unit 4 and fold the fabric over the stabilizer and press the fold.
- Using a Decorative stitch or straight stitch and topstitch ¼ from the folded edge to complete the Unit 4 Pocket Unit.
- Repeat Steps 7-9 to make the following pocket units; 5 ½” x 11 ½” FuseEase Light and Fabric A 11 ½” square to make Unit 5 piece, 4” x 11 ½” piece of FuseEase Light and (1) 8 ½” x 11 ½” Fabric B rectangle to make (1) Unit 6 piece and 7” x 11 ½” FuseEase Light and Fabric D 11 ½” x 14 ½” rectangle to make Unit 7 piece.
- Center the Unit 2 piece 1 ¼” from the bottom of the Unit 4 rectangle. Make sure the folded edge is on top. Topstitch Unit 2 piece down each side and across the bottom to secure the pocket to the Unit 4 Rectangle to make (1) Unit 8 Pocket Unit rectangle.
- Place Unit 3 rectangle right side up on a flat surface. Position Unit 8 rectangle along the left side, aligning the raw edges. Position Unit 7 rectangle along the right side of Unit 3 piece, aligning the raw edges. Place Unit 5 rectangle on top of Unit 7 rectangle and Unit 6 on top of Unit 7 rectangle. Clip or pin all the pieces together. Use an 1/8” seam allowance and sew all the way around the layered pieces to make the Journal Inner Unit.
- Place Unit 1 rectangle on top of Journal Inner Unit, right sides together.
- Stitch around the two units, leaving an opening at the bottom for turning.
- Turn the sewn piece, right side out and press.
- Topstitch around the edges to complete the Journal cover.
- Slide the front and back covers of the 7” x 10” journal into the side pockets to complete the journal.
