Whether you're making pillows, coasters, or something entirely different, this technique opens up endless creative possibilities. Let’s get started and turn those scraps into something special!
Supplies Needed:
(4) assorted 10” squares of fabric
(4) 10” squares of FuseEase Light
(1) 9” x 12” piece of FuseWeb (without paper)
(1) 9” x 12” piece of backing fabric
(1) 9” x 12” pieces of CloudFill Fleece S
Basic Sewing Supplies
Matching Threads
Wonder Clips
Open Toe Foot
Iron and Ironing Mat
Steps to making fabric
- Cut 3/4” strip off the 9” x 12” piece of FuseWeb along the 9” edge.
- Press the 3/4” strip of FuseWeb to the top edge of the 9” x 12” piece of backing fabric.
- Press (1) 10” piece of FuseEase Light interfacing to the wrong side of each 10” square of fabric. This will keep the raw edges of the fabric pieces from fraying.
NOTE: if you are using smaller scraps, you may want to skip this step.
- Cut the 10” squares of fabric into strips. For this example, I use 3/8” strips.
- Align the fabric strips for the vertical weave along the top edge of the backing fabric, on top of the FuseWeb strip.
- Once all the strips are in place, follow the manufacturer's instructions to press the strips to the FuseWeb strip.
- Flip up all the strips to expose the backing fabric, position the larger piece of FuseWeb on top of the backing fabric. Use Wonder Clips to hold the FuseWeb to the backing fabric.
- Flip up every other strip as shown.
- Position the first horizontal strip on top of the vertical strips as shown. Make sure this strip is snug against the pressed vertical strip tops.
- Flip down the strips. Now flip up the opposite set of vertical strips. Position the next horizontal strip.
- Continue Steps 8-10 to continue to weave the remaining horizontal strips to the desired length.
- Double check that the strips are snug against each other. Once everything is in place, press the strips to the backing fabric with the FuseWeb in between the layers to make the new piece of fabric.
You can use this fabric to create applique shapes, pillows, coasters, bags and so much more. Here are the steps to create a set of 4” square coasters from the above fabric.
- Place the newly made fabric on top of a piece of CloudFill Fleece S with the fuse dots facing up and press the two layers together.
- Using either a straight stitch or a decorative stitch and stitch the strips down to the backing fabric and fleece.
- Trim the edges of the stitched fabric and cut (4) 4 ½” x 4 ½” squares. Cut (4) 4 ½” squares of fabric for the coaster backing pieces.
- Position one backing piece, right sides together with the sewn fabric squares. Clip the two pieces together.
- Sew the two pieces together leaving an opening for turning. Clip the corners and turn the sewn coaster right side out through the opening.
- Press in the edges at the opening and topstitch around the edge of the coaster to close the opening and finish the coaster.
- Repeat Steps 16-18 to make the remaining three coasters.
And just like that, you’ve transformed fabric scraps into beautiful, usable fabric with FuseWeb! Whether you’re planning to make pillows, coasters, or other creative projects, the unique fabrics you’ve made are sure to add a personal touch to your creations.
