Curves, Squares and Straight Stitches with Lexi Ellis

Camelot Fabrics is privileged to work with an array of talented makers who showcase our products in their inspiring handmade projects. For National Sewing Month, we want to celebrate these makers and their zeal for sewing.

Today we are sharing projects from Lexi Ellis of Honey Bee Homemaker on Instagram where she shares her modern quilting and artistry.

Lexi started sewing two years ago while learning to make handmade dolls. Quilting had always been interesting and drew her in as a way to get in touch with her creativity after having a baby. Over time Lexi has become a better quilter by making it a daily habit be in her sewing space learning new techniques. Sometimes sewing sessions last for only five minutes, but the habit of consistence has allowed her skills to flourish.

Lexi’s favorite projects to make are scrappy quilts, free motion embroidery projects, and bags. A maker that has inspired Lexi is Rosie Taylor on Instagram as she offers free blocks patterns that are easily accessible. Like today’s project!

With a bundle of Camelot Fabrics New Fresh Solids and Behind the Seams CloudFill Fusible Fleece, Lexi created a show-stopping mini quilt for us to be inspired!

The Mini Quilt was made using a free Drunkards Path Block pattern by Rosie Taylor Crafts.

Pieced together stylishly with the Fresh Solids colors curated by Lexi herself in Hot Pink, Cactus Flower, Lemon Drop, Chartreuse, Mint Chip, Splash, Poolside, Apricot and Iris. While the pattern comes with four size options; 4”, 5”, 6”, and 8” Lexi chose to work with the 5” block for her mini quilt making a total of 9 blocks. Completely finishing in a 15-1/2” square.

Now you may be thinking that this project is for an experienced quilter, but even a beginning sewist can handle the simple steps laid out in the pattern.

The benefit to challenging yourself with curved lines is to expand sewing skills. Once mastered, sewing curves opens your project repertoire to a whole new range of possibilities.

A more detailed look at Lexi’s Mini Quilt shows how she mixed the placement of the colors in each block adding a playful vibe to the overall feel.

We at Camelot Fabrics love color play and the mixed placement has our eyes dancing from block to block completely mesmerized.

While the brighter colors are dancing within the quilt, Lexi made an expert decision in framing them with a solid stabilizing color like Iris. Looking even closer, the handstitched quilting matches the frame tying it all together.

Thank you Lexi for making a colorful art piece to hang using Camelot Fabrics. Visit Lexi on Instagram @honeybee.homemaker to see more of her handmade creations and a fun surprise she has planned.
