The Swatch to Stitches Challenge: Big Creativity from Small Swatches

Sometimes the best ideas come from the most unexpected places.

While cleaning up our merch room, we discovered a stash of unused 5" × 5" fabric swatch packs that had been waiting for their chance to shine. We knew we didn't want to see them go to waste, so we started thinking... what if we turned them into a creative challenge?

That's how Swatch to Stitches came to life!

We sent each participant a bundle of fabric swatches and invited them to create anything they could imagine. To help bring their ideas to life, we also included a few favorites from our Behind the Seams collectionCloudFill Fusible Fleece, along with FuseEase Fusible Interfacing in both light and medium weights. Whether they were adding soft structure, creating stability, or giving their projects a polished finish, these sewing essentials were there to support every stitch.

Our goal was simple: give these fabric swatches a second life, spark creativity, and connect with our incredible maker community.

The results exceeded all our expectations! From thoughtful accessories to beautifully finished home décor and everything in between, every maker found a unique way to transform the same bundle of fabric into something special. Let us introduce you to their creations, hear about their experience, and hopefully, also inspire your next project!

Inspired by her love of patchwork and making every fabric scrap count, Katy transformed her stack of 5" × 5" swatches into an adorable teddy bear full of charm and personality. Her project beautifully demonstrates how even the smallest fabric pieces can become something truly special.

To help stabilize the intricate patchwork, Katy used Behind the Seams FuseEase Light Fusible Interfacing, while CloudFill Fusible Fleece added the soft structure needed to give her teddy its shape.

One of the most inspiring parts of the Swatch to Stitches Challenge was seeing how differently each maker interpreted the exact same starting point. Armed with identical bundles of 5" × 5" swatches from our Mixology and Fresh Solids collections, every participant brought their own style, techniques, and imagination to the challenge.

Many participants also discovered how the right sewing notions can make all the difference. Throughout the challenge, Behind the Seams products helped add structure, stability, softness, and durability, allowing each project to reach its full potential.

Most of all, the Swatch to Stitches Challenge reminded us that creativity doesn't depend on having large cuts of fabric. With a handful of swatches, a few quality sewing essentials, and plenty of imagination, our maker community transformed simple squares into projects that were as unique as the people who created them.
