I am the indie designer and over caffeinated mama behind Buck & Bloom Patterns.

On my channels you experience the end results of my creative ideation process, but today I wanted to share a glimpse behind the scenes of my creative process when designing new sewing patterns.

My ideation process typically starts two ways:

1. Inspired by Need. There is something I need that I simply cannot find RTW, so I make it! 

2.  Inspired by Fabric. I go on  “inspiration” walks by endlessly scrolling fabrics online, until I find a pattern that sparks an idea! (then I obviously add it to my stash 😏) 

The Câlin Shacket was a Fabric inspired design. 

Back in July 2022 I was one of the lucky winners of the Camelot minky giveaway! Camelot gifted me their Casper and Batman Halloween minky, and the playful patterns instantly sparked an idea for a whimsical dress up pattern! Their minky is just SO soft that it inspired me to design something that would “wrap” my kids like a blanket, while providing daily function and inspiring play. 

Isn’t it amazing how the combination of fabric pattern and texture can change an entire vision for a design? Imagine if my fabric was a Double Gauze in the same prints, I would of never designed the Câlin Shacket!   

From that first “Spark” the Câlin Shacket is now a full pattern range with ten creature options! It is an easy, and versatile pattern that works with knit and woven fabric, and is sure to amaze tiny dreamers and explorers!
